As of early 2026, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese is actively collecting evidence regarding the targeting of journalists and media workers in the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly following October 7, 2023. Key details regarding submissions are: Focus: The study covers the killings and attacks on Palestinian journalists and media workers, the destruction of media infrastructure in Gaza, and the role of Israeli and international media. Set out below is my carefully researched Submission that may help others do likewise.
Submission by Dr Gideon Polya, Melbourne, to investigation by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese into the killing of Gaza journalists and the role of international media.
(1). Preamble: “deaths from violence and deprivation” and International law.
It must be emphasized at the outset that the killing of any individual is a tragedy and a grievous loss borne by family, loved ones, friends and community.
Numbers matter and it is important to quantitate how many people have been killed by violence and deprivation in the Gaza Genocide, and indeed in any such atrocities. In wars, violent occupations and neo-colonial hegemony deaths from imposed deprivation greatly exceed violent deaths but are conveniently and shockingly ignored by racist and mendacious Western Mainstream media. Thus whether a child is killed violently by bombs, bullets or bashing (direct deaths) or dies from imposed deprivation (indirect deaths), the death is just as final and the perpetrator just as guilty. Global avoidable mortality since 1950” that quantitates avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation for all countries and indeed also uniquely provides a succinct avoidable mortality-related history of all countries [1]. Thus presently each year 7.4 million people (mostly children) die avoidably from deprivation on Spaceship Earth with the rapacious First World in charge of the flight deck [1].
However Google the phrase “deaths from violence and deprivation” and you will be utterly shocked by the outcome: of 125 results obtained (April 2026) zero (0) are from hugely-resourced Mainstream media and nearly all are due to one stubborn humanitarian scientist, Dr Gideon Polya.
In war, violent (direct) or non-violent (indirect) mass murder of civilians is a war crime that violates the Genocide Convention (Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide [2]). Article II of the Genocide Convention defines genocide thus: “In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.” Article III of the Genocide Convention: “The following acts shall be punishable: (a) Genocide; (b) Conspiracy to commit genocide; (c) Direct and public incitement to commit genocide;(d) Attempt to commit genocide; (e) Complicity in genocide.” Article V of the Genocide Convention: “The Contracting Parties undertake to enact, in accordance with their respective Constitutions, the necessary legislation to give effect to the provisions of the present Convention, and, in particular, to provide effective penalties for persons guilty of genocide or any of the other acts enumerated in article III” [2].
Crucially, Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War) unequivocally demands that an Occupier is inescapably obliged to provide the Occupied Subjects with life-sustaining medical services, food and other key requisites “to the fullest extent of the means available to it” [3]. This is grossly violated by the US and US-backed Apartheid Israel in numerous wars and occupations. Of course Article 2 of the UN Charter expressly forbids invasion of other countries: “3. All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered. 4. All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations” [4].
(2). 680,000 Gazan “deaths from violence and deprivation” by 25 April 2025 (Day 569 of the Gaza Genocide).
Expert epidemiologists published in the leading medical journal The Lancet estimated that 64,260 Gazans had died violently by 30 June 2024 (day 269 of the killing) [5, 6] and hence (assuming the same rate of killing) that 136,000 Gazans had died violently by 25 April 2025 (day 569).
The wartime ratio of indirect deaths from imposed deprivation to direct, violent deaths ranges from 2 (Iraq War, 1990-2011) to 16 (Afghan War, 2001-2021) [7, 8].
Expert epidemiologists “conservatively” estimated 4 deaths from imposed deprivation in Gaza for every violent death [9-11], this indicating 544,000 non-violent deaths and 680,000 Gazans in total killed by violence and imposed deprivation by 25 April 2025 [12-19].
680,000 Gaza deaths is 11 times greater than the 64,000 Gaza deaths reported in May 2025 by Western Mainstream media and 28% of the pre-war Gaza population of 2.4 million. By way of comparison, the Nazis killed 28% of the pre-war Jewish Hungarian population (my people)[20, 21].
The date 25 April is significant in the context of Palestine. In Australia and New Zealand it is the sacred Anzac Day that remembers (“lest we forget”) Australian and New Zealand war dead. It is also the anniversary of the invasion of Turkey by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on 25 April 1915 (it is also the anniversary of the beginning of the Turkish-imposed Armenian Genocide at exactly the same time). On 31 October 1917 the Anzacs defeated the Turks at Beersheba, this enabling subsequent conquest of Palestine by British and Allied forces [22]. 2 days later, on 2 November 2017 the British Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour issued the “Balfour Declaration” by means of a letter to Zionist Lord Rothschild and stating: “His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country” [23]. Eminent and prolific Jewish Zionist historian Professor Sir Martin Gilbert in his book “First World War” (p373) states that the 1917 British Balfour Declaration was actually issued in an attempt to get Jewish Russian Zionist support for continued Russian involvement in WW1 [24, 25].
Before the present Gaza Massacre, Palestinian Genocide deaths totalled 2.2 million from violence, 0.1 million, and deprivation , 2.1 million [26]. However as of 7 October 2025 the century-long Palestinian Genocide has been associated with 3.1 million Palestinian deaths from violence , 0.3 million, and deprivation, 2.8 million [27, 28]. The non-violent deaths commenced with the WW1 Palestinian Famine (0.1 million deaths) [26-28]. The violent killing of Palestinians commenced with the 10 December 1918 Surafend Massacre of about 100 Palestinian men and boys by Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers [29]. Australia has been involved in all 1950 onwards US Asian wars, atrocities associated with 40 million Asian deaths from violence and war-imposed deprivation [1]. Over 103,000 Australians have died as UK and/or US allies in foreign wars [30]. 2 Australian journalists, Yassmin Abdel-Magied (ABC) and Scott McIntyre (SBS) were sacked for making anti-war comments on Anzac Day [31, 32], Yassmin Abdel-Magied merely posting on her Facebook page the following 7 words: “Lest we forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine)” [31].
(3). In the first 2 years of US-backed Zionist Israeli killing there were 875,000 Gazans dead from violence and deprivation including 325,000 children, 207,000 women and 342,000 men.
Since the so‑called “ceasefire” of mid‑October 2025, the violent killing of Palestinians has continued albeit at a much lower rate, and there is continued Zionist Israeli constraint on aid and aid worker access to Gazans in gross violation of Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. It is accordingly difficult to assess post-Ceasefire deaths from violence and imposed deprivation. However using data and methodology published by expert epidemiologists the leading medical journal The Lancet (see (2) above) one can assess Gazan deaths from violence and deprivation in the 2 year (731 day) period from 7 October 2023 to 7 October 2025 as documented below.
Expert epidemiologists published in the leading medical journal The Lancet estimated that 64,260 Gazans had died violently by 30 June 2024 (day 269 of the killing) [5, 6] and hence (assuming the same rate of killing) that 64,260 x 731)/269 = 175,000 Gazans had died violently by 7 October 2025 (day 731 i.e. after 2 years of killing).
The wartime ratio of indirect deaths from imposed deprivation to direct, violent deaths ranges from 2 (Iraq War, 1990-2011) to 16 (Afghan War, 2001-2021) [7, 8]. Expert epidemiologists “conservatively” estimated 4 deaths from imposed deprivation in Gaza for every violent death [9-11], this indicating 175,000 x 4 = 700,000 non-violent deaths and 875,000 Gazans in total killed by violence and imposed deprivation by 7 October 2025.
Assuming, in the absence of other data, that the proportions of children, women, and men among indirect deaths mirror those reported by Gaza’s health authorities for violent deaths, the 875,000 total therefore would include approximately 325,000 children, 207,000 women, and 342,000 men [12, 33-40]. These figures, however, underestimate child mortality, as they do not account for the extreme vulnerability of children under five, who represent about 70 percent of avoidable deaths from deprivation in impoverished countries (see Gideon Polya, “Body Count. Global avoidable mortality since 1950” [1]).
(4). Quantitating the killing of Gaza journalists.
It must again be emphasized at the outset that the killing of any individual is a tragedy and a grievous loss borne by family, loved ones, friends and community.
For the purposes of comparing the horrific killing of Gaza journalists with like atrocities a useful metric is “journalists killed per million of population per year”. Marium Ali and Hanna Duggal, Al Jazeera (26 August 2025): “Israel has killed more than 270 journalists and media workers since it launched its war on Gaza” [41] (for pre-Gaza Genocide and recent estimates see [42-48]).
Accordingly one can compare “Journalists killed per year”: 270/2 = 135 (in the first 2 years of the Gaza Genocide) with the average of 82 per year for the World (2013-2023) [44].
However a proper comparison must be made on a per capita basis. Thus the average Gaza population in the first 2 years was (2.4 million + 1.5 million)/ 2 = 1.95 million. Accordingly “Journalists killed per million of population per year” = (135 per year)/ 1.95 million population = 69 (for Gaza) as compared to the 1993-2023 average of 0.0084 (the World), 0.07 (Mexico), 0.26 (Afghanistan) and 0.09 (Iraq) [44].
The “journalists killed per year per million of population” is 69/0.0084 = 8,200 times greater for Zionist Israeli-oppressed Gaza than for the World [44].
(5). Comparing horrific Gaza deaths in 2 years with Nazi and Axis atrocities in WW2.
Zionism is genocidal racism and is Nazism without gas chambers and mass killing events but with Zionist Apartheid Israel having one of the world’s largest high technology military and arms industry. Indigenous Palestinians were about 50% of the Subjects of Apartheid Israel but 5.6 million x 100/ 7.7 = 73% were excluded from all human rights and from voting for the government ruling them (neo-Nazi Apartheid ). The Jewish Israelis represented 47% of the Subjects of Apartheid Israel but the Zionazis have made the majority Indigenous Palestinians second class citizens in their own country [52, 53]. After the Gaza Genocide the Occupied Palestinian population was reduced from 7.7 million (50% of the Subjects of Apartheid Israel) to 6.8 million (44% of the Subjects). Germany was a Nazi dictatorship for “Aryans” under Hitler from 1933-1945.
(6). Shocking genocidal racism and egregious mendacity of Apartheid Israel and Zionist-perverted US and US Alliance politicians and Mainstream media.
The core ethos of Humanity is Kindness and Truth but this is grossly violated by genocidally racist, egregiously mendacious and endlessly thieving Apartheid Israel. As a WW2 Jewish Holocaust-impacted, anti-racist Jewish Australian scientist and humanitarian writer I am inescapably bound by the core imperatives from the WW2 Jewish Holocaust (and indeed from all genocides and holocausts), namely “zero tolerance for lying”, “zero tolerance for racism”, “bear witness” and “never again to anyone” – however these crucial injunctions are also rejected by Apartheid Israel. The bottom line in Science is “zero tolerance for lying” for obvious reasons. Some final shocking realities must be briefly mentioned – realities resolutely ignored by Apartheid Israel and Zionist-perverted US and US Alliance politicians and Mainstream media.
(1). Apartheid Israel rejects 15 major international laws and convention [52].
(2). Those Zionist-perverted individuals, corporations and countries supporting Apartheid Israel are thereby rejecting “all human rights for all” , supporting the utterly vile crime of Apartheid, and are thus utterly unfit for decent company, public life, public positions and public events (e.g. Eurovision, the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games etc).
(3). Apartheid Israel’s continuance is due Western acceptance of a shocking list of at least 35 Zionist lies (e.g. Lie #1 “Israel is a Jewish state”, Lie #2 “Israel is a democracy”, Lie #3 “Israel is a liberal democracy”, Lie #4 “Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East”…) [54-56].
(4). 1950-2005 avoidable deaths from deprivation in countries variously occupied by Apartheid Israel total 24 million [1].
(5). US-backed Zionist Israelis are 0.1% of the global population but have 90 nuclear weapons, have attacked 18 countries, and in the last 2.5 years with US backing have devastatingly bombed 6 countries (Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, Yemen, and Iran). Apartheid Israel exports deadly high technology arms and surveillance systems around the world to dictatorships and democracies alike [57-60].
(6). The Zionist-perverted US and US Alliance have joined the all-European International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) that espouses a false and racist definition of antisemitism that has been rejected by over 40 anti-racist Jewish organizations. The IHRA is anti-Jewish anti-Semitic and anti-Arab anti-Semitic (by falsely defaming anti-racist Jewish, Palestinian, Arab and Muslim critics of Apartheid Israeli crimes as assertedly “antisemitic”) and holocaust-denying (by ignoring all WW2 holocausts other than the WW2 Jewish Holocaust and indeed ignoring all other holocausts and genocides) [62].
(7). The genocide- and holocaust-ignoring Western Mainstream media and politicians presently report about 75,000 Gaza deaths, grossly under-reporting by a factor of 12 the 2-year total of 875,000 Gaza “deaths from violence and deprivation” (Google the phrase), this including the deaths of 325,000 children, 207,000 women and 342,000 men [12, 33-40].
(8).There is massive Zionist-inspired Western Mainstream repression of decent folk opposing the Gaza Genocide and demanding “all human rights for all”. This repression is most notable in Trump America, the UK, Germany and Australia (all members of the racist and lying IHRA). In Australia (that is second only to the US as a fervent supporter of Apartheid Israel) the government can outlaw law-abiding groups it doesn’t like and jail leading figures for 15 years. In the extremely backward state of Queensland anyone causing a person to be offended by using the phrases “from the river to the sea” or “globalize the intifada” faces 2 years in prison. Zionist McCarthyism is now emplaced in Zionist police state Australia.
(9). I am observing Zionist falsehood, intimidation and censorship in Australia. In addition to numerous scientific publications, I have published a thousand humanitarian articles and 9 huge humanitarian books. Over 2 decades ago the ABC (Australia’s equivalent of the UK BBC) permitted me to make 3 nation-wide broadcasts. However I was subsequently endered almost invisible to Mainstream Australia by 2 decades of Zionist defamation and Mainstream media censorship. Of thousands of Letters sent to Mainstream editors in the last 2.5 years only 6 have been published. While 10 hard-hitting Letters in a row were published by the notable Alternative medium Pearls and Irritations, this totally stopped after 6 September 2025, as did any publication by Mainstream media [35]. However these numerous Letters (mostly Gaza-related) are published on the website “Australian Mainstream media lying & censorship” that is shocking testament to what Zionist-perverted Australian Mainstream media don’t want their readers to see, know about or think about [39]. The author of “Free Palestine, End Apartheid Israel, Human Rights Denial, Gaza Massacre, Child Killing, Occupation and Palestinian Genocide” [63], I was advised by a lawyer: “Don’t go to Queensland”.
Final comment.
The Western Mainstream journalists not ethically reporting the Gaza Genocide have condemned themselves for ever for betraying the 270 courageous Gaza journalists who have sacrificed their lives by truthfully reporting the ongoing atrocity.
