Even if, whenever the bombing and shelling stop, there are still some homes left standing in Gaza, if all of the basic infrastructure that makes human survival possible (notably electricity, water and sewerage) has been destroyed, with no prospect of repair and restoration being permitted, there would be nothing for people to return to and no practical alternative to the permanent evacuation/expulsion/transfer of the entire population of Gaza.
Indeed, it was reported early in Israel’s genocidal assault that the U.S. government offered Egypt a massive financial incentive to take in and resettle the entire population of Gaza, an offer which which President El-Sisi rejected, and, among the weaponry which the U.S. is reported to be providing or planning to provide to Israel are “bunker buster bombs”, which can penetrate deep underground and would be capable of putting Gaza’s essential infrastructure definitively out of service.
In this context, the limited ground incursions which have now begun are unnecessary, designed essentially to pacify the rage for revenge of the Israeli electorate and to support the pretense that Israel is only seeking to eliminate Hamas operatives, while the highly publicized but drop-in-the-ocean “humanitarian aid” trucks are irrelevant, designed essentially to distract the attention of an appalled and disgusted world from Israel’s continuing implementation of its plan to make Gaza literally unlivable.
